Water Restrictions in Miami Dade County

Phase Two Rules in Effect

By Renee Chapple, About.com

As of April 18, 2008, Miami Dade County is in a sever water shortage, as declared by the South Florida Water Management District. As a result, modified Phase II water restrictions are now in effect. What does this mean for the average homeowner? Let’s take a look at the practical effect of these restrictions on our lives.

In general, all wasteful and unnecessary water use is prohibited under the restrictions. These restrictions apply to all water sources (public and private) with the exception of reclaimed water systems. For the typical home (with less than five acres of property), the following restrictions must be followed:

Landscape Watering Restrictions

  • Watering is only permitted on specific days of the week and only from 12AM-9AM. Homes with addresses ending with an odd number (1, 3, 5, 7 or 9) may water on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Homes with addresses ending with even numbers (0, 2, 4, 6, 8) or having no number may water on Thursdays and Sundays.
  • Hand watering is permitted for 10 minutes per day using a single hose with an automatic shut-off nozzle.
  • If you have new landscaping, you may water it from 2AM-8AM, Monday to Friday for the first thirty days after planting.
  • You may “water in” pesticides and fertilizers for ten minutes following application.

Car and Boat Washing Restrictions

No restrictions are in effect at this time.

Other Watering Restrictions

No restrictions are in effect at this time.

Observation of these restrictions ensures that there will be enough water for you and your neighbors to share throughout the dry season. If you fail to comply with these restrictions, you may be issued a citation by law enforcement and are subject to fines.
