Top 10 New Year's Resolutions

By Renee Chapple, About.com

According to a recent study by Entrepreneur Magazine, 71% of Americans plan to make New Year’s Resolutions. Let’s take a look at some of the most popular resolutions made each year. We’ll throw in some advice on how you can accomplish them Miami-style.

1. Lose weight and get in shape

Miami’s a great place to get in shape! Our climate lends itself to year-round activity. One great way to get in shape is to join a running club. These organizations are designed for runners of all abilities (yes, even you!) and will help you make a commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

2. Get a better job

Has the cost of living in Miami got you down? Try to find yourself a better job using our job search resources. You might try getting a new position with one of the Fortune Magazine Best Places to Work in Miami. Or perhaps you want to pursue an entirely new career and obtain your real estate license.

3. Take a trip

Travel refreshes the mind and spirit. If you can’t get away on an international trip, try taking a weekend getaway from Miami. One popular destination is the Florida Keys.

4. Get out more around town

There’s plenty to do in our wonderful city. Have you been to South Beach recently? How about taking an airboat tour of the Everglades?. Check our Miami Events Calendar for other ideas to keep you interested throughout the year.

5. Volunteer your time

There are plenty of opportunities to share your time and talent in our city. If you can’t find something specific to your skills, try joining an organization that promotes different opportunities. For example, the MOMS Club of Miami participates in a variety of volunteer activities throughout the year.

6. Give to charity

If you’re not able to volunteer your time, consider giving from your wallet. The many charitable organizations in Miami could certainly use your financial support.

7. Go back to school

Whether you’re a college graduate or never managed to finish off that high school diploma, there are educational opportunities abound in Miami. We’re home to the University of Miami and other colleges and universities.

8. Move

Maybe the New Year has a change in scenery in store for you. Whether you’re planning a move across the country or just across town, planning is vital. You might want to check out our real estate resources or consider renting an apartment.

9. Quit a habit

Whether it’s smoking, drinking or something else, New Year’s is a great time to kick a habit. Make sure you seek professional assistance to make sure your plan is feasible and a healthy approach.

10. Change your lifestyle

Whether you plan to get married, have a child or simply adopt a pet, New Year’s is a common time to reflect on your current life situation and contemplate changes you might make during the upcoming year.
