Miami Hospitals Top Nation in Care

The Bascom Palmer Eye Institute, part of The University of Miami's School of Medicine, was recently recognized by The U.S. News and World Report as a leader in the eye care industry. Located on NW 17th Street, it was founded in 1961 and has grown to be the standard in eye care research throughout the United States.

Bascom Palmer has distinguished itself since its inception through the improvements it has made to ophthalmology. Some of the breakthroughs include the invention of new microsurgical instruments, performing new surgical procedures, and identifying the causes of certain retinal defects. The research institute is only a part of what they can offer. The clinic treats more than 160,000 people each year, including infants and children. They also provide the only community-based ophthalmic care to low-income and indigent patients in Miami. No one in the community in need of care will be turned away.

Another outstanding Miami Hospital recognized this year was University of Miami, Jackson Memorial Hospital. Jackson won top ratings in many categories: digestive disorders, #39; ears, nose and throat, #36; geriatrics, #38; gynecology, #37; heart and heart surgery, #50; hormonal disorders, #33; kidney diseases, #34; and orthopedics, #24. For a hospital to be among the best in so many categories, it means that they have to spread their resources evenly and successfully among all departments. With so many ranked specialties, the administration must be doing an excellent job meeting this goal.

Also recognized by U.S. News and World report was Miami Children's Hospital, rated #20 in pediatrics nationwide. Each year this list of top hospitals is published as a service to the country in identifying excellence. The ratings are based on a combination of factors such as reputation, money going to research and patient care. It's great to know that Miami is home to such first-rate hospitals!
