MOMS Clubs of Dade and Broward

By Renee Chapple, About.com

If you are one of the thousands of women in the Miami or Broward area who have given up work for the chance to be a full-time mom, you may feel that you’re the only one out there. During the day, when all of your friends are sitting in their office jobs, it’s easy to feel alone and frustrated by not leaving the house. That’s why motivated moms around Miami and Broward have started chapters of the International MOMS Club.

Begun by a mom in California who was tired of finding no activities to attend during work hours with her children, she decided to find other at-home moms in her area. Over time, chapters have spring up all over the country and internationally.

MOMS Club stands for Moms Offering Moms Support. All activities meet during the day, when moms need support the most, and of course are open to children as well. Activities include park play days at neighborhood parks, field trips to educational and historic places, and breakfast and lunch at local restaurants. All events are held in the area of the club, so there’s usually very little time spent driving.

Other events are hosted by members. There’s Kids in the Kitchen that teaches math and cooking skills with simple kid-friendly recipes. Craft Creators creates simples crafts and artwork to hang on the refrigerator. Cooking Casual lets moms get together for a monthly potluck lunch and recipe exchange on a theme. Perhaps the biggest draw for some moms is the monthly Mom’s Night Out. For those lucky enough to get a husband or friend to baby-sit, moms can get together and be ‘just one of the girls’ for a night. There are a lot of other activities like a book club, scrapbooking and playgroups that are started and maintained by member interest. If there’s something you would like to see they don’t offer, start it!

The MOMS Club is a non-profit organization that does much in the way of charity. For its members, the club offers home-cooked meals in hectic times (good or bad- sickness or a new arrival!), physical support in times of need (by donation of baby furniture for that new arrival, for example) and emotional support. For the community, there have been Thanksgiving and Christmas drives, hurricane relief for victims of Charley, a meal drive for the Ronald McDonald house, and a craft drive for the Miami Children’s Hospital.

There are currently chapters in Kendall, Davie, Hollywood, Pembroke Pines, and Weston. To find out if there’s a chapter near you, check on The International MOMS Club website (make sure you send an inquiry to HQ- not all chapters are listed on their site.) If there is not one near you, any chapter would be happy to give you everything you need to start one. Harried stay-at-home moms, fear no more: your salvation is here!
