Charitable Giving in Miami

By , About.com Guide

Miami is a city built on building a better life for its people. Many came to Miami from other cities or countries to find out what it could offer and have reaped the benefits of hard work and an amazing social structure. One of the things that keeps this city in the forefront is the question most of us feel: How can I give back?

There are a variety of charities and institutions here to fill our needs, whether it is an educational need, a cultural need, a medical need or something more off the beaten path. If you are in a position to help a cause here, congratulations! Take a peek at some of Miami’s more interesting topics; all of these are local charities, so you can be sure that the impact is being felt right here at home.

Gifts and Donations
If you are looking to donate household items, there are many places that will accept them or schedule a pick-up at your house for larger items. Goodwill Industries International is a network of 207 community-based, autonomous member organizations that serves people with workplace disadvantages and disabilities by providing job training and employment services, as well as job placement opportunities and post-employment support. There is a main Goodwill Industries Headquarters at 2121 NW 21st St. If you call (305) 326-4156, someone will be able to direct you to a more local drop-off of schedule a pick-up. Another pick-up service is provided by The Salvation Army Corp, a faith-based organization ministering through education. You can schedule a pick-up through the Salvation Army in Miami by calling (305) 573-4200. Both Goodwill and the Salvation Army will take vehicle donations and cash donations as well, as will all of these no-for-profit organizations; the donations can make a nice tax write-off for the end of the year.

Arts and Culture
One organization serving the cultural needs of our children is Ft. Lauderdale’s The Inside Out Theatre Company. The Inside Out Theatre was created with the mission of building character in children and young adults through a very powerful tool: the performing arts. This theatre’s company offers performing arts classes, artist-in-residency programs and performances of original musicals based on socially relevant issues that promote respect for self and others, celebrate diversity and emphasize the importance of responsibility and teamwork.
