Special Transportation Services for the Disabled

By , About.com Guide

Having a disability often makes it hard to get around, but Miami-Dade is helping to make it much easier. You may have seen the specially marked Paratransit/Special Transportation Services (STS) vehicles around town without knowing what they are. For people with a mental or physical disability having trouble getting to doctor’s appointments, they are nothing short of a life-saver.

For some, using public transportation like buses or the metromover are difficult or impossible. For these people, the STS service fleet of minivans, sedans, and small buses will pick them up at their home and take them to appointments, school, the store or for recreation for a $2.50 charge each way. Ride privileges extend to destinations into parts of South Broward County and upper Monroe County. The rides are smoke-free and may be shared with other passengers heading in the same direction.

Residents or visitors who have coordinated with the County ahead of time may use the service for a permanent or temporary disability. If you have an ADA pass or handicapped license plates, for example, you are eligible.

To find out if you are eligible, call (305) 263-5406 or TTY (305) 263-5459, or check the STS Rider’s Guide.

Each month, the companies licensed and contracted to perform these services must attend a meeting to provide the latest policy information and safety inspections. Parties interested in driving for the STS team should call (305) 263-5400 for more information.
