University of Miami: An Overview
The University of Miami is a world-renowned institution of higher education located in our own backyard. According to the US News & World Report rankings, it’s the 55th ranked university in the United States. The University and its athletic teams (the Hurricanes) are known and respected throughout the world for achievements in the realms of teaching, education, service and sports.

The university’s beautiful main campus is located in Coral Gables, Florida, adjacent to US 1 and the Metrorail line, just south of downtown Miami. There are also several other campuses in the region: the two largest are the medical campus (collocated with Jackson Memorial Hospital in downtown Miami) and the Rosenstiel Campus which houses the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science on Virginia Key. More information and maps may be found at the UM Campus Maps page.

UM boasts 12 colleges and schools, including both a Medical School and a Law School. The diverse variety of degree programs offered by these schools include over 180 bachelor’s programs, 130 master’s programs, 61 doctoral programs and 2 professional programs. Combined, these programs granted over 4,000 degrees during the 2004-2005 academic year.

The impact of the University in our community is substantial. According to an economic impact study conducted by UM, the University’s total economic impact on the state of Florida is $2.3 billion. Over $1 billion of this is within Miami-Dade County and approximately half of that is within the City of Coral Gables. The University employs approximately 9,200 individuals, 2,200 of whom are members of the faculty. These positions, combined with those indirectly created by UM, account for 1 in 28 jobs in the county. These faculty and staff serve approximately 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students.

One of the most high profile contributions made by UM to the Miami area is the Hurricanes athletic program. The Canes recently left the Big East conference to join the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and are proud holders of national titles in men’s baseball, men’s football, women’s golf, and women’s swimming and diving.

One tidbit that’s not well-known, even within our local community – the University of Miami is a private institution. During the 2004-2005 fiscal year, the University received approximately $1.4 billon in revenue from tuition, grants, patient care and gifts. Approximately $170 million of that figure came from charitable contributions.

Miami is proud to serve as the home of this fine academic institution and we look forward to its continued involvement in our community.
