Conch Republic Independence Celebration
On April 23, 1982, the residents of Key West, Florida declared the secession of the Florida Keys from the United States and formed the new county of the Conch Republic. While the secession may have been in jest, the movement lives on today with residents flying the Conch Republic flag and carrying Conch Republic passports. The celebration of Key West’s “independence” reaches a fury every April when the city celebrates Conch Republic Independence Week.
